why did hoards of people travel out to the western frontier in the mid 1800s

Well there were lots of reasons. But one of the main ones i'm familiar with is "Manifest Destiny" or the "Monroe Doctrine" the american people believed that coast to coast was ours no matter who was there or what was there. Nothing was going to stop us from taking north america (other then canada already being here)
