The civil war in which rebels defeated the Tokugawa shogun. Because that led to fierce xenophobia, in which massive amounts of Dutch were butchered. Also, this nationalism fueled a very efficient economy, at least in comparison with the rest of Asia. The Meiji emperor was critical as well, espoused major developments in technology and commerce.
