What does it mean for an equation to be balanced and why must you keep an equation in balance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please describe with details and examples.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a balanced equation means that the equation is true. The equals sign is a statement of fact such as: 1+2=3 If you add 1 to one side you get an imbalanced equation: 1+2+1=3 NOT TRUE (UNBALANCED)! To balance it out you make it true again by doing the same to the other side: 1+2+1=3+1 So if x=y then x+1=y+1

Hope that helps
