They bought their tickets and surrendered them in anticipation...explanation?

Simple ~ When you visit the theater - you have to give the ticket that you bought (therefore "surrendering" it) to the person who collects them, and when you've been really really excited about going to see it you have been "anticipating" it.... It's just stating that they bought their tickets then gave then turned them in, feeling really excited about going in..
