During the Mississippian period, Chief Priests lived in temples on top of large earth mounds. The higher the mounds were, the more important the Chief Priest was. The mounds overlooked central ceremonial plazas. When a Chief Priest died, the temple would be destroyed and the earth mound would be used to build a new one for the next Chief Priest. The closer a person's home was to the plaza, the more important one's social status was.
