Suggestion: Template for question such as physicsforums site has, and many others. I don't usually complain, but...
But people don't seem to be taking advantage of this site for what it is. If you go to the math section most people are just cheating, and a lot of people helping seem to only care about SmartScore (which I believe is useless). I'm not saying remove SmartScore, but there should be something done about this. I'm talking about the kind of cheating where the person has no interest and is looking just for the answer. I don't think it's bad at all for people who are doing assignments and taking advantage of the intelligent tutors on here and picking their brains to learn the subject because that's what I call good cheating, it benefits both of the people. But there is a pandemic on math section, maybe other sections to (haven't looked) where people are just handing out answers with no explanation whatsoever, and I say this, because I do care about the state of OS. Side note: The sites really acting up, A LOT.
Or I think I'm just slowly turning into a conservative...
Tell me about it.
^^ ikr People spamming each other with medals and making spam questions so that when you click it, you read fan me or medal me.
Yeah, people need to understand medals don't help anyone, I've known PhD's who were like 53 and probably much smarter than everyone lol but they don't care either. I just find it ridiculous now how much people are addicted to it, I guess I was to at once but you eventually learn, once again how useless it is.
It happens all the time, but I think the reasoning for our not doing much about it is that the mods don't want everyone jumping on every question and being like "OMG UR CHEATING BYE"
You shouldn't have to say that, just make a logical guess and continue on to help someone who is willing to learn, I doubt the mods would care very much but yeah it's a bit excessive at that point.
I totally agree with you @Astrophysics , i know some users who after reaching 99ss become less active then before:P
Yeah, that's a problem, when you hit 99 I guess is when you realize how pointless it is.
Any suggestions?
@Astrophysics am I guilty?
since I reached 99, I no longer have the desire to cheat but now I strive hard to get to 100 without cheating
@Ashleyisakitty since SS isn't leaving, I really don't know how to fix the problem, maybe before posting like how it says "write here" in the comments, put show work and what not kind of like guide I suppose and if they follow the guide, we know they are willing to learn. For example: Lets take physics hehe The guide would say something like, The problem, relevant equations, and the attempt, and you have to fill out these guidelines to post, this isn't new at all, I've seen this in various forums, but you get the point. @Isaiah.Feynman That's for you to know friend. @nincompoop Good luck with that nino :p
Sorry for the bad grammar!
I know right! I hate it when people just want the answer. Once I gave this person a link for help and he/she said, "Just give me the answer," Like really?!
And you just noticed it? :P
Yeah but mostly it's the guy that's answering's fault. I just caught @AnswerMyQuestions giving a direct answer on a post. You can find the post here: http://openstudy.com/updates/5450e04be4b0f1ed5e7c535e
-.-
@ganeshie8 Says It's Ok to give answers when the asker can't decide between 2 choices.
You don't have to worry about that, because I, I was helping him with the question and you come over and give him a direct answer. Openstudy has some cheaters with lame excuses.
OpenStudy has some cheaters who rage when they don't get the medal.
Go look through the code of conduct, no not YOURS which says that you can cheat by giving direct answers. Yeah, and you're talking about yourself because you were mad I was helping him and you wanted to be greedy and get the medal for yourself, what could be quicker than giving a direct answer?

I agree but its mostly kids who are taking online classes. It is hard not having a teacher to help you with these things. Instead of giving them the answers it should be taught.
if the asker has a toss up between 2 choices, ask them to explain their thinking, then correct their thinking if need be, or ask them to make the choice. the solution is in the process, and by the end of the process the asker should be able to make a confident decision.
There's no need to name and shame @Conqueror It's alright long as you know you made a mistake. But I think it would be very helpful if there was a template of some sort helping the users with their problem, heck it would get them to start thinking, that's what we want to do at the end of the day right? And it would make it easier on the users helping as well, we wouldn't have to try guessing what they're thinking/ why, etc. I know it won't end cheating or what ever, but I think it would be one small step into ending it on here.
I would say that (mostly) the smaller the smart score the smarter the person is LOL
well people are intitled to there own opinion, k??
i want medals to get to 99 but then i got report for spaming but i wasnt spamming so i level up really slow....
people also want medals to unlock titles
I totally agree @Astrophysics.... Like a person will message me just for the answers like WTFFFF.....
Well, staying away from SS as it has a high chance of not being changed/ removed. I might contradict myself here, I'll be honest and say cheating won't ever stop nor can you tell someone to stop it will always be up to the person to decide whether or not they're doing the right thing or not. What I'm trying to say is, we should at least try to get people to think critically, and I really do believe those who are interested would use a template if presented to them.
well...this got you a copule of medals didnt it....lol
*couple
I am NOT sticking up for the cheaters but I don't think some people are purpouselly trying to get the answers they just give up and want the answers BUT I think ambassaders should just stop of the people that out right ask for the answers this is just my opinion anyone agree or get the idea of what I am trying to stay @astryophisics
Lol yeah, I guess we can just ignore haha, maybe I should just stop caring as it doesn't affect me, but at some point OS needs to do something. I can only suggest things.
xD smart score is like a joke 2 ways to get it :- 1-being here for long time 2- acting smart xD
ashtroooo
Ikrammmmooooooooo yeah basically I guess lol, I guess to get 99 they should make you do some number theory questions..bleh. =P
i have been here for one year xD
and i only answer questions thats worth my time :O
You're a genius Ikrammmmmm
nope , im mathematician xD there is one genius here xd
list goes on
LOL! i agree with solomon
Ouch. So many things going on. My head hurts.
i know right?
I'm sorry to hear that Preetha, and I know it might be a bit of a shock, but we have to look at things as they are and try our best to find solutions for them. If we keep avoiding such problems, they will keep on adding up. My suggestion for this certain problem was to have a template that would require people to fill it out, and I'm not asking much in the template. Of course it wouldn't stop cheating, but it would help everyone avoid the people trying to cheat and getting people to start thinking critically. But as always there might be better solutions, and that's just one suggestion.
Seriously we need more mods that are assigned different jobs. Like one mod is only for reports or something of that sort, another for chats and such.
Yes, but you also don't want to overwhelm them. You need to remember being a mod is volunteer work, they don't have to do anything if they don't want to.
I do a different thing when I answer a question. I ask them if it's from a test. If it is, bye bye, can't help you
the best approach is to help judiciously, as others have said. ask questions to see if they show serious desire to learn
That's always a good start but you don't want to have to do that for every question, that's why I suggest a template which does that work for us, but that's just one suggestion, there are probably other ways to handle this as well.
