ok...umm...silly question, but for clarity's sake: Is Eclipse a java compiler? and is the compiler the thing that runs the program?

It is an integrated developer environment. In case of Eclipse it is a compiler + interpreter see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_development_environment

If you have to use Eclipse, do it, but I STRONGLY recommend using BlueJ instead, its much more simple to see your classes and drivers. http://www.bluej.org/
