Jared has a wooden board that is 11 ft long. He wants to cut it into two pieces so that the longer piece is 4 ft less than 4 times the length of the shorter piece. How long will each piece of board be? Shorter piece: ft Longer piece: ft

OpenStudy (anonymous):

longer feet= 4 x shorter piece - 4 total length of board = longer feet + shorter feet .. let x be the shorter piece so shorter piece =x longer piece= 4x -4 total length of board = 4x -4 + x 11=4x -4 +x solve for x ->shorter piece and substitute x in the equation for longer piece which is 4x-4
