What did the Louisiana Purchase achieve for the United States? (award) It doubled the size of the country and provided control of the Mississippi River. It prevented a western attack on the United States by Spain. It improved relations with England and Canada and prevented Indian invasions. It stimulated the economy and strengthened the alliance with France.
It allowed the United States to expand west. Had the U.S. not been able to expand beyond the Mississippi River it would never have amounted to much. The plains states would have become the breadbasket of France. The natural resources of the Rocky Mountains and west to the Pacific could have strengthened France into a true superpower and significantly changed modern history.
