In the Christian bible it pretty much says that women are to be baby factories and keepers of the home. This trickled into social norms where women weren't to be educated or go out much

The Islamic bible is similar, however you have more extremists in the spotlight now than Christians. Women are threatened and beaten and killed for going to school in the middle east

The US government passed laws preventing discrimination based on sex, race, and religious beliefs. It's hard for others to respond to the problem (like the middle east) because they don't consider it to be a problem, it's so deeply ingrained in their culture
