Why is iodine deficiency no longer a common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States? How is thyroid disease diagnosed?

We pack iodine into foods as a "dietary supplement". We can see an example of this in iodized salt. Thyroid disease is diagnosed from TSH blood levels (blood test). A low TSH is hyperthyroidism while a high TSH is hypothyroidism.
