OpenStudy (mathmale):

Ambiguous expression. Which do you mean? a) (-2/3)*4, or b) -2/(3*4) ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a

OpenStudy (mathmale):

OK. Then what is (-2)(4)? What is (-2)(4)/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

(-2)(4)=-8, yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just want the answer please lol

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What is [(-2)(4)] / 3 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Come on, you can do this problem yourself.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Simplify: (-2)(4)/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-8 / 3 = -2.67 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes. Personally I'd leave the answer in the form -8/3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks

The difficult thing here seemed to be ambiguity. When in doubt, use parentheses to indicate the order in which math operations should be carried out.
