One basic Difference that I know is :

Linux is Open-Source whereas Windows is fully owned by Bill Gates . :P

Open source means Linux is not copyrighted, you can edit it, make it look more better and give the edited Linux the name you want to..
But to edit in Windows, you should have money to give it to Bill Gates, because he has the copyrights. :P
