Several alphabets, major cities, and law codes developed in the Middle East, in addition to three of the world's largest religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Today, many Muslims, Jews, and Christians believe this area to be the "Holy Land" and make pilgrimages from great distances to visit religious sites. Many practicing Muslims and some orthodox Jews also continue the tradition of facing their bodies towards the Holy Land when praying.
