Nuclear power plants are designed to convert nuclear energy into _______________ energy.

OpenStudy (mstoldegon):

The answer is Electrical, but it is not direct conversion. The heat produced by nuclear fission turns water into steam, either directly or more commonly by circulating the heated water through a heat exchanger to transfer the heat to water that is not passing through the reactor's core. The steam produced drives axial turbines that are connected to generators, usually through a speed reducing gear box - this is because the steam turbine is turning a lot faster than the electrical generator needs to turn.
