If you know calculus then you can take the derivative and second derivative to find the max and min value of the cubic. 

If you don't know calculus, then the best you can do is know the general form of a cubic and find the x values where f(x) =0. 

After you find the zeros, you can enter x values slightly below and above each zero to see which direction the cubic is going. 

The hard part is figuring what is happening in between the zeros. For that, you are going to have brute force it by checking a bunch x values and plotting the y values to get a general idea of where cubic changes direction.
