OpenStudy (dannyrod2000):

The Puritans settled in Massachusetts with the goal of achieving religious freedom - that is, to be free of the influence of the Church of England and to be able to establish a society that was based upon the Puritan interpretation of the Bible. Puritan society demanded faithfulness to the established church, and so religious pluralism was not welcomed. Religious dissidents like Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams preferred to leave Massachusetts rather than submit to the Puritan brand of Christianity.
