Imagine that you again push on a door, but now push 1 and push 2 are applied at the same place, near the door knob. Again, both pushes are equally hard and equally long. The only difference is that push 1 is perpendicular to the door, while push 2 is at an angle, as drawn here. Although the exact angle doesn’t matter, make it reasonably small, under 45°. Which push will produce a bigger torque? Intuitively, why is that?
You can try this at home! Or you can think about it...how do you push open a door? Do you push the door into it's own hinge, does that open the door? or do you push it perpendicular to the door itself? It doesn't really make sense to open a door by push it into the hinge right?
