The distance between the upper ans lower quartiles is a measure of spread. This difference is called the interquartile range (IQR), and is the range of the middle 50% of the data. Notice that the boxes in both box plots are not symmetrical with respect to the maximum and minimum values of the data. This indicates that there are significant numbers of outliers in the data in both cases. This will affect the calculation of the values of standard deviation when measuring the spread by this means, giving a distorted impression of spread. For this reason the IQR is the better measurement of spread for movies and games.
