OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Am I right? Medals! :) The data set shows the high temperatures during a week in August:

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

When calculating the average high temperature for the week, Mrs. Ortiz said that Thursday's data should be excluded because a cold front moved through that day. Evaluate this claim by selecting the statement that best reflects why the reasoning is either correct or flawed. The reasoning is flawed. Even though Thursday's temperature is an outlier, it occurred during that week and there is no reason to exclude it. The reasoning is flawed. Thursday's temperature is not an outlier. The reasoning is correct. Thursday's temperature is an outlier, and excluding it will lower the mean. The reasoning is correct. Thursday's temperature is not an outlier, but it should be excluded because it was the coolest day of the week.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

I think its C. :)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

@texaschic101 Please help?

OpenStudy (igreen):

Hold on.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Nvm, it is an outlier..

OpenStudy (igreen):

Which excludes two choices..leaving you with..A or C.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Mean of Data with Outlier = 98.43 Mean of Data without Outlier = 100 So what's your answer gonna be? @Secret-Ninja

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

89,98,99,99,100,101,103 Q1 = 98 Q2 = 99 Q3 = 101 IQR = Q3 - Q1 = 101 - 98 = 3 outliers will be :less then Q1 - 1.5 * IQR = 98 - 1.5*3 = 93.5 more then Q3 + 1.5 * IQR = 101 + 1.5 * 3 = 105.5 so Thurs temp of 89 falls below 93.5...it is an outlier I think it is C also....but you might want to see what iGreen says

OpenStudy (igreen):

@Secret-Ninja Option C states that removing the outlier will DECREASE the mean.. I just showed you the means with and without the outlier. So what's your answer gonna be?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

BTW Sorry that I responded late, my connection is horrible at this time of day. :/

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

So it IS C?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

oh....iGreen your right....its not A..but Thursdays temp is an outlier

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thats up to you...after all, it is your grade :)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Okay... C is my final answer. I'll put that choice and let you know if it was right.

OpenStudy (igreen):

No, I think it's A.

OpenStudy (igreen):

@Secret-Ninja DONT PICK C

OpenStudy (igreen):

C says that removing the outlier will DECREASE the mean. Mean of Data WITH Outlier = 98.43 Mean of Data WITHOUT Outlier = 100 Removing it will INCREASE the mean.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Oh okay fine.... A it is. I'll let you know. Its just that the mean ISN'T LOWERED when the outlier goes away, It goes up.

OpenStudy (igreen):

Exactly.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Thanks bye. Can I tag you in my last question?

OpenStudy (igreen):

Sure.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yep, I got it right. :)

OpenStudy (igreen):

:D

OpenStudy (igreen):

Btw, @texaschic101 I did that to see if it was an outlier too..lol. :P
