separation of powers::: an act of vesting the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government in separate bodies.

Separation of Powers refers to the separation of powers delegated within the Federal Government. The framers of the Constitution saw that with the Articles of Confederation there was too much power given to the states and there was no executive branch/executor for the federal government. So the framers made three branches of federal government both to appease the Antifederalists and because of the fear of a too powerful government like they had in Great Britain. The three branches of federal government: Executive - The President and his Cabinet Judicial - The Supreme Court Legislative - Congress - The House of Representatives and the Senate Each can check the other in an attempt to balance the power of the Federal Government, that's called Checks and Balances
