OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you are adding or subtracting fractions, you first need to find a least common denominator. The LCD of 14 and 10 is 70. So now change the fractions so that you have both with the same denominator. Remember you need to multiply the numerators by the same number you multiplied the denominator by. So your new fractions would be: 40/70 - 35/70 Then just subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator! :) 5/70 This can be simplified to 1/14. Hope this helps! :)
