Unlike most other organelles, the mitochondrion has a double membrane. Electrons that are stripped from glucose in the cytoplasm pass through the outer membrane. The electrons are passed along a series of proteins embedded along the inner membrane, releasing energy as they go. How does this help the organelle to perform its function?

The inner membrane of the mitochondria has many folds, called cristae, the increased surface area helps increase the amount of ATP production.
