How do you find the surface area of a non-linear function rotated around a line?

(I can find the surface area of a function rotated around both the x- and y- axis, but I don't know what to do with the line.. possibly split into x and y components? But that's extremely complicated for some functions. Possibly in the intergral, instead of finding the radius with relation to the x- or y- axis, find it in relation to the line? But what about the effect of the slope of the line of the function being rotated?)
As long as you have the equation of the curve you are revolving it shouldn't be to bad
