In October of 1962, the United States learned that the Soviet Union was building missile facilities in Cuba. Due to Cuba's close location to Florida, the U.S. became concerned. The U.S. and Soviet Union already had a bad relationship, but this discovery made things worse. The relationship between the U.S. and Cuba also suffered. On October 22, President John F. Kennedy ordered a naval blockade on Cuba. The naval blockade meant that no U.S. ships could enter Cuban territory. Kennedy also demanded that the Soviets take down the missile bases.
