I have a good friend who survived Iwo. There was lots of killing on both sides. Not much capturing the airfields at Iwo Jima was necessary for the invasion of the Japanese homeland. Both sides knew that and the Japanese fought like they were defending their home. They weren't gonna be captured. The 3,000 Japanese left after the battle hid in caves or committed suicide. 
We lost a lot of Marines at Iwo Jima but 30,000 is to high a number. 26,000 casualties and over 6,000 Americans killed.
