Kendra owns a restaurant. She charges $3.00 for 2 eggs and one piece of toast, and $1.80 for one egg and one piece of toast. How much does Kendra charge for an egg? A piece of toast?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the price for one egg be e and the price for one toast be t (both in dollars). Then: \[ \begin {eqnarray*} 3 &=& 2e + 1t, \\ 1.8 &=& 1e + 1t. \end {eqnarray*} \]Subtracting, we get e = 1.2 and t = 0.6, so the price for an egg is $1.20 and the price for a toast is $0.60.
