Equations in the form y = mx+b are inconsistent when there are no solutions. Put another way: if you have no solutions, then the lines must be parallel (or else they'd intersect to form a solution) If you have an inconsistent system, then the y-intercepts of each line are different but the slopes are the same (to ensure you have two parallel lines that never cross) |dw:1415325073838:dw|
