There, the carbon dioxide undergoes a chemical reaction and forms carbonic acid within the blood. When the carbonic acid reaches the capillaries in the lungs, the enzyme carbonic anhydrase helps reverse the reaction and the carbonic acid is converted back to carbon dioxide and water.
