Help?? how do you turn X^2 6x - 55 into factored form

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

find the factors of -55 that add to 6.... the larger factor is positive and the smaller is negative then write it as (x + larger factor)(x - smaller factor)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be (x + 5)(x-11)?

@campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

almost... the middle term is + 6 so you need to just reverse the signs +11 and - 5 as 11 - 5 = 6

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

oops....I just reread the question.... there is no sign, you may be right... if its +6x then (x -5)(x + 11) if its -6x its (x - 11)(x + 5) sorry about that

Thank you. That helps a lot.
