Well what if you had a really good friend, and knew your username, and you changed it, then that person wouldn't know your username anymore...

I would say that it should cost medals to change a user name or at least a sort of transaction and it would say underneath the persons old user name or a button to check past user names.

@TheSmartOne Just in case you didn't know, I actually WAS the person who said that stuff..Conqueror wasn't on my account or anything. And it definitely wasn't me trolling.

The username is an identifier for many processes on the openstudy server. If you'd change that, your entire account would very likely become corrupted. On top of that, old post with tags in it would contain non working links. It's easy to fix by using another id like an account number or something but the odds of that ever happening are very slim.

i agree with all of you, yes it should cost something and if you change it, it should show any previous names you have had and if someone clicks on ur old link it should still come to u or the old link could change automatically

Couldn't they just do something like UPDATE blah FROM blah WHERE name='oldname' SET name='newname', or would that take a really long time to be processed?

Wouldn't we loose 2 usernames.. And a new person who uses that username will get tormented by all the people who are tagging and messaging the person who just changed their name..

We could put a notification for someone you fan that says
"So and So has changed their username to Such and Such"
And if you can only change it once
It would prevent a few things messing up in the system
And if those tags could be changed once a username is changed

@poopsiedoodle nosql allows for some interesting structures and duplication in the data. Partially I bet it is that. However, it more that it would have to lock the database from changes and go through every record to do this. So a few terabytes of old posts to dig through... urgh. Yes, this is possible. They actually had some admin tools in the past that did things like this, not name changes but close/delete all posts of an abusive user. It is mentioned in the mod manual. On the mod chat area I saw some posts about why they stopped using it. It just too too much resource wise. So it is basically a deep design flaw they are stuck with.

So it shouldn't make a difference.

Basically they can change my name to a capital. After they change the name it will be capital for all new posts.. They don't have to change the name in the old posts.

They actually would. Everywhere your name shows up would have to be changed. That means every place they used your name. Every question you've answered or asked.
