Well, the US needs to know you are here and won't cause trouble. The most important reason why we have the naturalization test is because we need to make sure you are not a "spy". It's so we know you don't have any really "close ties" to your native country. Many people believe that if you move here illegally you are here to cause trouble and damage to the US while others argue that some people are just scared to actually become an "American citizen". And many also argue that some people just don't have the money to move unless they do it illegally.
