If one needs to store 45 distinct characters, how many bits would be required?

probably 8 bits per character, since 8 bits have 256 possibilities, which is somehow linked with unicode... not completely sure.

It is going to depends on the encoding. For example, UTF8 does things in 1 to 4 bytes.
