Psychotherapy—In psychotherapy, a trained therapist listens to a patients symptoms and tries to improve the patients understanding of the reasons for his behavior. There are three kinds of psychotherapy: Insight therapy—People gain a better understanding of their illness so they may be able to change their behaviors. Cognitive and behavioral therapy—This type helps a person identify situations, objects, or thoughts that trigger abnormal behaviors. Group therapy—People meet in a group to work through problems and develop coping skills. Members of the group have similar problems and a therapist leads the group in productive sessions. Drug therapy—Some mental disorders require prescription medications to control. These drugs permit the person to function in his work, school, and social life. Hospitalization—If a person's mental illness is severe enough and he could be a danger to himself or others, he may require hospitalization. The patient is monitored constantly and medications are regulated for best results.
