Santorio Santorio invented the first recorded thermometer in 1612. Galileo invented the thermometer’s predecessor, the thermoscope, in 1596. What is the difference between these two devices? The thermoscope didn’t measure temperature differences. A thermometer is portable but a thermoscope must be stationary. Santorio’s thermometer required mercury to work properly. A thermoscope measures degrees in Celsius and a thermometer in Kelvin.
