If an Oxygen ion has a negative 2 charge, how is it written? is it O-² or O²- ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a chemistry assignment and I got the O with a negative 2 charge answer already. I just need to know how to write it correctly.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

different people have different preferences. if you're using a software program, it may have its own preference for how it recognizes inputs. in writing it, you can usually get away with writing either, but I prefer \(O^{-2}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so it's based on preferences?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

generally, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh. Well alright. Thanks a lot!
