What is the simplest way to permanently get rid of an unwanted file?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Depends on what you mean by permanently.

You can use command prompt or terminal depending on what Operating System you have.

@kory.haas2 In Windows you can use Shift-Delete in the GUI, which bypasses the Recycle Bin, but the data is still there so it is not necessarily permanently gone. A data recovery tool can still get it back. On the other hand, a space recovery tool can overwrite the file location with zeros. A security tool can overwrite the file with garbage patterns until there is nothing to be gotten back.
