Logic Question: The following 4 statements and only these are found on a card. On this card exactly one statement is false. On this card exactly two statements are false. On this card exactly three statements are false. On this card exactly four statements are false. The number of false statements is exactly. a) 0 b)1 c)2 d)3 e)4 This was the first question I got like this and had no real examples to work off of, and help would be greatly appreciated.

3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

liar's paradox ?

OpenStudy (dan815):

haha

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its more difficult than you think it is @andu1854

OpenStudy (dan815):

lets think about this, if statement 1 is true, then how many statements wud be rendered false

OpenStudy (dan815):

u get it?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you're also going with 3 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

On this card exactly one statement is false. `T` On this card exactly two statements are false. `F` On this card exactly three statements are false. `F` On this card exactly four statements are false. `F`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that seem to agree xD so yeah we're done !

OpenStudy (dan815):

S1 if T --> then 3 true, 1 False but if true 3 False, 1 true s2 if T-->then 2 true 2 false but if true ,3 False,1true .... s3 if true then 1 true, 3 false but if true 3 false 1 true yep

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

however that doesn't agree with first statement semantically

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

because you're evaluating true/false based on meaning of the sentence, you need to consider the truth value of the sentence also

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

s1 says there is only one false statement but you found 3 false statements isn't that a classic liar's paradox ?

OpenStudy (dan815):

right okaay

OpenStudy (dan815):

lemme think again, i think if we write out true and false scnearios for each statment, it shud work out

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Next you're gona try this : On this card exactly one statement is false. `F` On this card exactly two statements are false. `F` On this card exactly three statements are false. `T` On this card exactly four statements are false. `F`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that seem to work ?

OpenStudy (dan815):

ya

OpenStudy (andu1854):

Thank you very much, that was a huge help...
