a) Well, it might help to know the definition of relevant. Def: closely connected or appropriate to the matter at hand.
b) Okay, once you know the definition, you can kind of get the hang of how to use it. If something is irrelevant, that means its not related to whatever it is you're talking about. Something insignificant, I guess you could say. 
c) So a sentence could be: The information provided by the student was relevant to the ongoing topic of conversation in the class. 
d) You would use it to describe something that is related or appropriate to whatever you're talking about at the moment.
