Why did the writers of the articles of confederation want to create a weak national government

They were afraid that if they made a strong central government, the government would have too much power over them, therefore falling into the same situation as the one they had been in before (being ruled over by Britain). Of course, that did not work, creating a weak central government. With the states having too much power, the 13 colonies fell into chaos.
