http://www.dpac.tas.gov.au/divisions/local_government/dog_control/restricted_breed_faqs Pit bulls are not illegal in Tasmania, however it is illegal to import them. The Dog Control Act of 2000 was enacted in response to a number of dog attacks on humans. The law sets a number of restrictions on dangerous and restricted breeds. Dangerous dogs are those who have previously injured a human. Restricted breeds are those considered to be predisposed to violence. Pit bulls are well-known to be predisposed to violence--to my knowledge they are the only breed used in dog fighting. So the short answer is that no one can legally bring a pit bull (technical name pit bull terrier) into Tasmania, but since the law was only enacted in 2000, there are already pit bulls residing there and they are legal to own. Dangerous and restricted breeds of dogs, such as pit bulls, are also required to be de-sexed (spayed or neutered) and microchipped. This way they cannot reproduce, so in theory eventually Tasmania should be free of these breeds, and microchips allow the dogs to be located via GPS.
