Question

Dean Baldus enjoys scuba diving. He dives to 35 ft below the surface of a lake. His partner Jeff Balius, dives to 38 ft below the surface then ascends 24 ft. Find the vertical distance between Dean and Jeff.
Okay, so I did -35 + (-38) + 24 = -49
But I'm not 100% sure that that's right.. I'm not sure if you would add the -35 and -38 or subtract it.. (This might be a dumb question lol, I'm just confused I've been doing math homework for hours..)
