JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

Request: I think OS should Limit the chat to user with a SS of 50 and higher. This would stop like 75% of the spams that new user are causing. Trolls whould then have less interest in attacking the chats. So they would have to help some one first, and maybe that would get them to start helping more frequently and pull them out of there habit's. Also real trolls wouldn't take the time to help so that get them to leave and not do anything at all. @tkhunny

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@Preetha @thomaster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It wouldn't really help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And what if there are people who aren't trolls and want to chat? They'd have to wait.

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

What's the point of chatting? There their to get peoples attention for help. That doesn't mean you cant get help, you can still post a question. So how would that affect any one? It would only effect the trolls and spammers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea, what's the point of chatting on a help website? Why don't we just get rid of the chat boxes?

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

yea thats all I use it for but it shouldnt be there because its just for chatting and it is kinda annoying they curse on it too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I find no use at all with the chat boxes.

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

Ok don't spam the question like you people usually do -_-

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

I just say get rid of it but leave the little box on the right of it so we know how many questions there are or just get rid of it all we can just click on find more subjects

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

That is a pretty good idea. :) People usually make fake accounts just to spam so unless they are a very dedicated troll, they probably wont do it as much. :)

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Besides, It will make them work harder to get the better things so isn't that sort of going to be a mini life lesson?

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@Secret-Ninja Exactly it will actually get them working and maybe they would actually enjoy helping people

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

So now what? How do we make this work out? Who do we have to have to make see this question for it to happen?

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

I tagged the mods. We just need to be patient. @e.mccormick @Ashleyisakitty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Preetha

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

Oh Ma GAh @Joel_the_boss great idea bro ^_^ but i would bring it up to the SS to be 50 i agree 100% cause 75% of spam comes from users that have a smart score of 45 or lower like to spam allot in chats

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

We are still talking about this :D I really hope we change this problem

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@just_one_last_goodbye Yes 50 would be better, 45 is to easy to get.

OpenStudy (greencat):

I vote 50 SS should be required to chat.

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

yes @Joel_the_boss cause by 50 users should be familiar with the CoC

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yep 50 is better. :-]

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

Agreed

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@blurbendy What do you think?

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@Preetha @ash2326

OpenStudy (blurbendy):

I like your idea, Joel. I think it would definitely help prevent a lot of the trolling that goes on.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Good Idea, it would certainly prevent trolling.

OpenStudy (leader):

This has been suggested before.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

And it will keep new users concentrated on work before they have to opportunity for distractions or breaks, at least on OS. :]

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

A few moments ago a newer user spammed the math chat.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yeah, we need to get people of level 50+ to chat, not them. :/

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

@Joel_the_boss thomaster had come up with a more complex idea like this before http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/536272d7e4b0a83d8e0f0419

OpenStudy (greencat):

He required higher ss for things, as @nightwielder said. Plus, let the web team focus on the most important thing first.

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@sleepyhead314 Getting a SS of 30 is as. Opening and closing a question gets you to SS of 15 I think an if they have two accounts they can them medals and get them to an easy 30. I don't think it should be that low, with 50 you need to work hard and you are going to have to answer a lot more questions.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Yep. 50 is a better level to get to than 30.

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

This has been brought up before...

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

But I would like to see this being implemented

thomaster (thomaster):

50 would be a few days for the average user. Perhaps 40 would be better. You can easily get 40 in a day. The main point is not to prevent new users to use the chat but to give spammers a hard time getting their smartscore up to use the chat again. Once someone is suspended they can't possibly continue unless they have backup accounts. That's why I initially set the chat function at 25/30.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

The way I've helped many users is because I hang out in the chats a lot and they pop in there asking for help. At least 200 of my questions answered are because of that. To limit new users from using chats, that would defeat the purpose of OpenStudy. The moderators and ambassadors just need more tools and experience to handle certain circumstances. Also, the community needs to learn/get the guts to work together and community ban abusers. I have seen this happen on some occasions when a hated/disliked user pushes it too far, but still the community is the most powerful weapon as we are always online, while ambassadors and moderators aren't.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

I sooo agree!! Can we start enforcing it? Or however you say it.(I can't find the right word. I know it in russian just don't know how to say it in EnglishxD)

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@shadowLegendX @thomaster That's where another one of my ideas come in to play. The only way to get your question noticed is when you first post and bump it to the top, but sometimes it takes for ever, and with a subject like math its a win or loose situation. So as Shadow pointed out he/she mostly helps people who ask in the chat, so hat I was thinking right next to where it say bump, there should be a button the says "Ask in Chat". So New user wouldn't be the only one getting there question recognized. Of course there would also be a cool down time so it wouldn't be abused but that's just what I was thinking. So now the users that are below fifty or what ever it will be, can get there questions recognized with out having to mass tag or pm mods.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

50 is easy. I can get it in 1 day. The person can just make a backup account and give himself medals until he gets to 50. :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would be dumb, still. Because no matter if someone has 50 or not, they still can be immature and spam. I have met quite a few of them. Having a ss with 50 or higher means absolutely nothing at all. and if they made multiple accounts then, that would truly be immaturity because they cant earn it themselves the right way. Just saying. Not being rude. I think if someone spams, then they should just get the consequence of being suspended. (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I love this idea!

OpenStudy (donblue22):

Hopefully once OSSF is fully set up we will be able to decrease the amount of trolls/spammers and then we wont need this

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@Donblue22 Yea, @Librarian Finished the Registration so soon We will make the announcement.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

No actually @Joel_the_boss they should make it an SS of 65 or higher. Because getting to 65 takes a long time and that means you have to help a lot more people. Anybody would be easily be able to get to 50 because if they made another account hat means they had to have another account where they can spam themselves with medals to easily reac 50

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

agreed 65 will be good but there are still people at higher levels that spam and talk off topic I say just close it down or something

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

I was thinking about 60. That is a decent score.

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

@TheSmartOne @Joel_the_boss

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

Anything at this point, im tired of the spams.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

How about when you post you have to wait 15 seconds to posst again?

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

It is just a few people that are spamming. All the pictures have the same person.

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

He just blew up the English chat. @confluxepic Of course its the same person and I bet if you ip check him he already has another account.

OpenStudy (donblue22):

But the thing is you have people like me who have worked hard and still arent at 65 smartscore

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

55 should be borderline we meet in the middle.

OpenStudy (greencat):

Chat gets your SS up really high. It should not because people talk useless stuff for no reason.

OpenStudy (donblue22):

Im pretty sure chat doesnt affect your smartscore at all

OpenStudy (confluxepic):

It does. @Donblue22

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

@Donblue22 chat increases your SS by very little

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

yes but if we decide to change it to level 65 only for people talking there will still be spam and useless talk or off topic stuff

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

By one point a post. Overll you would need at least 500k points to acctualy improve an SS

OpenStudy (greencat):

Take me as an example. When I found out about the chats, I experimented. I used only the chats for a while to see how effective it is. Im already at 52.

OpenStudy (greencat):

The people in chats are fast-paced and get in lots of chats like "lol" and stuff.

OpenStudy (donblue22):

Weird Ive never noticed that thanks for telling me that

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

yea I like it though

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@Preetha @e.mccormick We really need your help if this is going to happen. We have 3 mods who already agree. I know this will work. :)

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

yea I hope it works too

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

its annoying to have so much spam

OpenStudy (donblue22):

So wait are we gonna set it to 55?

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

65

OpenStudy (donblue22):

But what about people like me who have worked hard and stil arent there?

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

No 55

OpenStudy (donblue22):

Ok good

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

There is one, exceptionally major flaw in the idea of saying anyone below 55 can't chat: How will they post a link to get help? There are tons of low help areas, like Social Sciences, where we tell people to post a link to their question in math chat. I am 100% against any proposal that eliminates that, which is why I have zero support for eliminating chat below any SS. What I have suggested, and many times, is a delay system that is linked to the SS. So a chat delay of 75 seconds - SS. This, coupled with a smaller chat message size, would eliminate spam as well as a number of the other issues in chat. Or, remove the present chat system and replace it with a different one. Something with far less chats and far better moderation and flow control tools.

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@e.mccormick That's where another one of my ideas come in to play.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

OK, so what chat does it announce in? All of them? Because if it is the chat for a dead topic...

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

I think it should correspond to the topic. And if it's a dead topic then it should be announced threw a banner sort of thing. You know how it say when some one you have fanned comes on, it should say "Soandso Asked a question in "blank"" It would only happen for questions you are studying. @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

@Joel_the_boss when will they update it

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

It's not passed yet. Im trying to make it noticeable first.

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

okay can I help with that

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

No, it's fine, im just looking for feedback from some mods. To see if they like my idea.

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

I like it you just need to call them using @something

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

@e.mccormick dont you like his idea

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Nothing really gets passed... the idea of limiting chat is like 3 years old. Thing happen when they do. Now, I am not saying that a banner thing is great, but the concept of making questions more findable is good. I think dealing with that first is more important. Then it is far easier to limit the chats by SS or as a paid feature, etc. all of which have been suggested before.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@Mvpriest6 Actually, he is promoting an idea thommaster had some time ago... like a year ago.

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

yea agreed I like it though

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

@e.mccormick Another thing is Smart cents. I think the chat should have admission. 5 Smart cents for each chat you open daily.

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

oh okay

OpenStudy (mvpriest6):

didnt know that isnt he a mod

OpenStudy (just_one_last_goodbye):

hmm how is this idea have any defects ITS PERFECT

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

So then people would be forced to help, and earn the privilege to chat.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Mod or not, anyone can make a suggestion. I have made several... which is why Preetha asked me to be a mod. And I really mean several... like 5 to 14 pages long emails, a number of them. The issue is that the development costs money, so things need to be practical and effective.
