Islam is not very prominent in India. They are mostly Hindu, and some other beliefs. It is creditable to believe that a country as large as India had Islam as a state religion and 500 or so years later has a small Islamic population. It is more credible to think that any ruler trying to govern such a large, diverse population would tolerate all beliefs to avoid revolts and other civil disruptions
