Maria has a bank containing nickels, dimes and quarters. in all there are 22 coins with a total value of $2.55. The number of dimes is 4 less than the number of nickels and the number of quarters put together. Find the number of nickels, dimes, and quarters in Maria's bank? my question is: how would i solve this using the steps of word problems (let x=, then, therefore...) this is a three variable systems of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you call the number of nickels \(N\) and the number of quarters \(Q\) and dimes \(D\) then the first line says \[D=N+Q-4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that gets rid of one of the variables (namely \(D\) ) right away

OpenStudy (matlee):

Lol i need help with this one too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, my teacher wants us to define the variable or make a chart for *step 2*?

OpenStudy (matlee):

Define what variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvmd, usually, i use charts to solve these problems

OpenStudy (matlee):

Tell me if you need help finding the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know how, but is there a way to set up 3 variable problems using a chart? i get confused on how to set it up.. that's all :(

OpenStudy (matlee):

a chart like this ? His equation was right
