Landing Page Redesign: Need your design suggestions.

Landing Page Redesign: We are looking to redesign openstudy.com, the landing page (the one with colored rectangles). I am looking to you for guidance on:
1. Things you think should be on this page - what elements, features, text etc
2. Other landing pages you like, why you like them, and what you like about them.

Hi Ms. @Preetha (:

I hope I am not late for suggestions. I read the post in Openstudy Feedback but Im gonna post my suggestions here because the other post is already long.

My suggestions:
1. Highlight the word: Free, Help, Signup
2. The boxes that indicate the different groups (math, phys, etc) look dull, so probably instead of boxes we can use owls. What I mean is we can have different owls that will represent the groups. The owls will be like in a comic format talking to each other about the subjects they are representing. Also, they should show how many helpers are online (number of people is changing, like an animation to show that there are tons of available helpers). There shouldn't be any problem with making the owls because we have a lot of owl makers here (: (I got this idea from the site I attached below).
3. I like the idea of adding video but don't you think it will make the page load slowly? so what im thinking is, instead of a video maybe you can link a word that will lead to the video. For example, you can make a button for 'Who we are?' (just an example) , if they click it, the video will gonna pop up like the videos in instagram.
4. Maybe we can also add a search box at the very top of the screen, just to fill up the 'dead space'.OR we can add Openstudy's questions widget at the sides, so that people will see samples of questions that are being asked but it should not be a simple capture of question, it should show the actual current questions (it should be moving :D )
5. For the background, I think the background for COC is a good option for that.
6. Like the site that I attached here, we should also show the ranking of helpers. It will depend on the number of medals they gathered in one day.

the khan academy landing page is also good, simple and it is very eye catchy. And these ones also : http://www.magictreehouse.com/# , http://www.sciencebug.org/index.html for kids, but I like it.

Good suggestions. Thanks for giving us the comparable sites. These really help. We have one draft ready and will be posting it here for comments soon.
Data - I like your suggestions. I want to find a way to add the answer widget. But the design we are going after is the "flat" one of many modern sites. I'll post it for you to take a look.

Maybe we can have like a simple box for them first to post a question and see that if they like the help before they make an account.
