From wikipedia: A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed through observation and experimentation. so a theory makes lots of prediction about how stuff works... so if results of some new experiment or observed data. doesn't fit with what a theory says ... we might need to update the theory , or maybe even look for a new theory.
