4(5 + 2x) - 5 = 3(3x + 7) --- distribute through the parenthesis 20 + 8x - 5 = 9x + 21 15 + 8x = 9x + 21 --- subtract 9x from both sides 15 + 8x - 9x = 21 --- subtract 15 from both sides 8x - 9x = 21 - 15 -- combine like terms -x = 6 x = -6
