Amy paid $63.75 for a pair of walking shoes during a 15%-off sale. What was the regular price? I am stuck on the same problem even after reading all the examples! I have a quiz due on Tuesday. I have tried dividing .85 into the sale price.

75 dollars

Do you want an explanation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is the regular price $63.75 is the regular price minus 15% of the regular price x - (.15)x = 63.75 this can also be written as (1 - .15)x = 63.75 I just factored out the x on the left side (1 - .15) = .85 so .85x = 63.75 x = 75

Nevermind

I understand that .85 is 15 percent of 100 what i dont understand is .85x=63.75 and dividing it.
