On May 2, 1803, the United States, led by President Thomas Jefferson, purchased approximately 828,000 square miles (529,000,000 acres) of land from France, thereby doubling America's size. The area known as Louisiana Territory stretched from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. Known as the Louisiana Purchase, the huge acreage soon formed part or all of 15 states at a cost of less than three cents per acre. It is considered one of the most important achievements of Jefferson's presidency.
